W.A.C Bennett Dam

Bennett Dam
located on the Peace River Canyon is one of the largest loose fill hydro electric Dams in the world. It is a massive testimony to the engineers of Canada's frontier and to the dedication of those who gave up land for the greater good to bring cheap hydro electricity to western Canada. The Peace River area isn't without controversy however and plans to flood vast sections of productive farmland in the area for another dam complex have been met with opposition. My sister took the time to drive me down the three hours through the flood zone to visit Bennett dam and to see rotors and stators generating electricity on such a large scale was awe inspiring considering the miniscule amounts of electricity I've generated so far. The dam has tour that can be taken that takes you underground to see the caverns were Western Canada and parts of the United States get their cheap electricity from. If you are in the area its definitely worth traveling to Hudson Hope and visiting for yourself. The staff there were amazing and knew their stuff the interpretative center was also worth taking time to play in especially generating with your hand electricity to power a CFL bulb and trying to power an incandescent light bulb had me nearly bust my gut!
